Hsuchow, Jan. 14.
Tsining, strategic city in southern Shantung, which was occupied by the Japanese on Tuesday night, was recaptured by the Chinese yesterday after a fierce counter-attack.
After the Japanese had occupied Tsining on the night of January 11, the Chinese troops under Lieut-General Tsao Ju-lin, Commander of the 29th Division, attached to the 3rd Route Army under General Han Fu-chu, Chairman of the Shantung Provincial Government, withdrew to the western bank of the Grand Canal.
Upon the arrival of heavy reinforcements, the Chinese, after crossing the frozen Canal on foot, launched a fierce counter-attack on the Japanese on Wednesday night, Taking them by surprise, the Chinese succeeded in penetrating the city and driving out the Japanese, The city was recaptured early yesterday, Continuing their pursuit, the Chinese are reported to have cleared out all Japanese troops within a 3-mile radius of Tsining—Kuo Min.
The entry of a party of eleven Japanese, believed to have been of the "renin" type, into the Paramount Ballroom shortly after 10 o'clock last night resulted in a disturbance, and the closing of the amusement centre at about 10.30, instead of half an hour later. Four of the party were wearing a kind of Japanese army uniform, end the whole party kept their hats on during the time they remained in the Paramount. A couple of Settlement policeman, a Japanese sergeant and a foreign sergeant, who were summoned by the management to deal with the disturbance, were unable to pacify the party, and advised the manager to close immediately.
A "North-China Daily News" reporter who arrived at the Paramount a few minutes after it had been closed, found a group discussing the disturbance in the foyer. "As soon as the party of Japanese came in," explained the manager, "they started to create a disturbance. They shouted out at other patrons, pushed and shoved, and generally were most aggressive. On the dance floor, they attempted to push aside everyone who happened to get in their way."
The manager stated that one of the Japanese picked up a chair and waved it around until it was taken away from him, Other patrons of the Paramount remained quiet in spite of the aggressiveness of the Japanese, until one of the party went up to a Russian dance hostess, picked her up, and started carrying her across the room.
