Emergencies Abroad

A certain amount of emergency work had to be provided for and the China situation was reinforced from Malaya and India. No big defence force was needed but Hongkong may need reinforcing now. Palestine continued to absorb two brigades and ihere is no immediate prospect of return to normal numbers, The trooping programme dealt with the last of the emergency moves and a feature was the commissioning of the second motor troopship, the Dunera and the decision to build a third and in time run the service as an all motor ship one by arrangement with the P. & O. and British India lines The 1937 manoeuvres were held on commandeered land in East Angli and Kent and a result was the decision to buy 16,00 acres in the area lying between Dover and Canterbury. An extension was also made on Salisbury Plain to give more room in the north and to bring in land about the Wylye valley in the south which will add more variety of terrain. And finally with all the changes it was decided late in the year that the Army should have a closer and more intimate link with the public and to secure this a Public Relations Directorate was formed at the War Office under Maj.-Gen. Guy Dawnay. This is a brief survey of innumerable changes made in 19: and the year is marked as the one in which the decision made to promote earlier and to place in key posts younger type of Genera Officer.

Brig. E. P. Quinan of the Jhansi Brigade is the latest selection for major-general and Col A. P. Sayer is made President of the R. E. and Signals Board.
