Ben Hendricks Yatch Captain.. Lee Shumway When a film such as "Windjammer," which opened at the Metropol Theatre yesterday, is listed by the management as only running for two days, the reviewer goes to it with a certain amount of trepidation—because if the cinema itself does not think the film, will last two days, it must be poor indeed. "Windjammer," therefore, care as e great and welcome surprise, for, despite one or two rather amateurish touches, it Is rattling good fun, It must be that the Metropol Theatre wished to use "Lost Horizon," their next film, over the Chinese New Year holidays; there can be little reason, apart from this, why "Windjammer" should be billed for such a short run, and it is to be hoped the theatre will bring it back for a second run later on, What makes it particularly notable is the performance of Mr. George O'Brien. Now, Mr. O'Brien is a lusty gentleman, one of manhood's perfect specimens in fact, and audiences are accustomed to seeing him in one type of role only—that of the red-blooded, silent he-man with jo couple of; ten-ton derricks for fists. But, lo and behold, in "Windjammer," while losing mone of his prowess at feats of arms, he shows that he is also very capable at handling a light role, with frequent sallies of humour. With the passing of most of the cow-boy films and the present taste for less fisticuffs and more wit, it looked at one time as if Mr. O'Brien was becoming somewhat passe; his part in this film, however, removes any fears that he might be becoming a back number, and it is to be hoped that "Windjammer" is but the prelude to even better films providing him with more scope to develop his new technique—in the future.
There are three curtain-raisers, one a clever series of pictures of animal life—-and death—seen through a microscope, the other two being of rather regrettable features sweepingly—labels "comedies." 5.4
