The Ever-changing Population

of Shanghai "North-China Daily News" Circulation Shows Great Overcrowding in Settlements Speculation on the movement of Shanghai's population since the hostilities is often being made, Where now is the immense community which lived a year ago in Hongkew and Yangiszepoo? Have they been absorbed in the Foreign Settlements er gone elsewhere Though this question applies in greater measure to the Chinese, the foreign population of Hongkew and Yangtszepoo was probably in the e proportion to the Chinese as in the Central Western areas of Shanghai. An analysis of our circulation, therefore, which is both foreign and Chinese, throws much light on this interesting inquiry. The following are comparisons of the dis-ion of the "North-China Daily in Shanghai made between one day this week and the same day last year, These figures show a greater rumper of copies sold in Shanghai this year than last, in spite of the number of foreigners and Chinese who have left the city during the hostilities; so that an even greater number must be making Shanghai their temporary home, This is borne out by the lack of housing facilities, both for foreigners and Chinese, within the perimeter occupied by the Japanese, It is hardly necessary to say that the circulation of the "North-China Daily News" in the interior of China has greatly diminished, Our last year's circulation of 2,000 copies mailed to Outports and Manchuria has now been halved, not only because of the general evacua-ion but because of postal and other difficulties to which there e; be no immediate solution.
