GERMAN CHANGE

Herr Hitler, who has gone from strength to strength in the government of Germany, is probably stronger to-day than he has ever been in the whole of his career as Der Fuehrer, He is now in supreme control of the country, and even the Army which did not always see eye to eye with him on the subject of Germany's foreign policy has been brought into subjection. The removal of Field Marshal von Blomberg and his chief of staff, the assumption of supreme command by himself and the elevation of Col-General Goering to a field-marshalship, together with the appointment of a new secret Cabinet council at one stroke unifies the Nazi Party and the Army, and should tend ultimately to wipe out those differences which have existed between them. There had been signs that the Berlin-Rome-Tokyo triangle was not quite so strong as it was at first believed.,|Army opinion was in favour of liquidating the German adventure in Spain, Germany was not too enthusiastic about the policy Japan was following in China, and there was no small degree of feeling that even the understanding with Italy was not so firmly grounded as it ought to be. Those holding stich views are now under the control of the one man who dictates Germany's foreign policy, and the completeness of German totalitarianism has been affected. It is natural that this development should cause some anxiety abroad, and the fear that this big change heralds the taking of greater decisions is, in the circumstances, inevitable. It is "probable that now that Herr Hitler is so firmly in the saddle he will increase instead of slacken his propaganda in Czechoslovakia and Austria, and it is probably in this direction that the results of this change will first be noticed, bit perhaps the most significant feature of the whole affair is the promotion of General Goering to Field Marshal, for if it means anything at all it must surely indicate that he is in the Girect line of succession to Der Fuehrer
