Chungking, May 19.
"A step in the right direction," is the comment of the "Hankow Herald," only English-language daily west of Hankow, which closely re-fleets Chinese official opinion, in a leading article this morning on the landing of British, American and French bluejackets at Kulangsu.
The Chinese English-language daily hopes that the Democratic Powers "will not be duped by the Japanese. "Instead of limiting their perspective to the immediate present," the "Hankow Herald" states, "it would be profitable to project their imagination into the future.
"Japan's xed policy of aggrandiscment on the continent of Asia, and of the elimination of foreign interests, cannot be altered by.concessions of manifestations of goodwill.
"The only effective way to meet that policy is to take positive action. The landing of British, American and French bluejackets at Kulangsu, which has compelled the Japanese to withdraw the majority of their bluejackets, is a step in the right direction, From now on," the article concludes, "the Powers should know how to deal effectively with the large-scale aggression which Japan is carrying on in China."—Reuter.
