War Clause in Contract Ever conscious of current events, Hollywood's motion picture industry began the other day to write war clauses into players' contracts, Joan Fontaine, petite film actress, received the first of these as she was called from her honeymoon with her bridegroom of several weeks, Brian Aherne, to sign a long term contract with Selznick International studios, where she filmed "Rebecca."
Deeply impressed with the seriousness of marriage and the fact that theatrical couples are too often separated by the demands of two different careers, Miss Fontaine requested a special clause in her contract to prevent any long separations, The clause, as written in, permits Joan to take leave of absence to accompany her husband on any trip providing she is not engaged in actual production herself. The studio, however, to protect its star, insisted on a "war clause" being added, Since Joans husband is a British subject likely to be called to the colours, the studio further specified that Joan could take her leaves of absence except for the purpose of going into any war zone.
