But for the presence of the two Chinese policemen, the "North-China Daily News" was reliably informed, the two Gerr mans might have suffered worse injury, and the situation would have been even more serious than it was already.

The incident occur: dat about 11.m., when the two Germans were out riding close to Hu ngjao Village, and were attempting to cross a wooden bridge near the village. They were shouted at by the Japanese, and ordered to stop. Without any provocation whatever from the Germans, the Japanese dealt Dr. Birt a vicious blow in the face with hi holding a drawn dagger, shouting, The soldier then attempted to pt the creek, but did not succeed is clenched fist, in which he was at the same time "English pig." ish Mr. Tiefenbacher's pony into in doing so.

With the assistance of the Chinese police, the two Germans were even {ually able to ride away without suffering any further, harm, Dr, Birt and Mr. started out riding from the old Culty Dairy, in Hungjao Road, using the new motor road from Hungjao Road to Hungjao Village, They had ridden for a little over a mile when they came to the wooden bridge where the Incident occurred. In order to eros the bridge, they dismounted, intending to lead their ponies eross. When Mr. Tiefenbacher was half way across the bridge, and Cly. Birt was still on the near' side, the Japanese soldier ran up from behind, shouting at them in Chinese to stop.

'The two men Immediately stopped, and the next thing that "happened was that the Japanese dealt Dr. Birt the ringing blow which caused his eye injuries. Tt appears that the handle' of the dagger caught Dr. Birt's eye, causing it to bleed, and half-stunning him. The Japanese repeated over and over again the words "English pig,", which, ape parently, were the only words of English he was able to utter.
