EFFECT OF SPRING Peculiarities of Canaries

To the Editor of the "Nonri-CiNa Day News"

Sm—In reply to Stuem's letter in your paper of to-day's date, may I Submit my observations.

'For several years I have been keeping canaries as a profession. 1 have noticed that with the approach of Spring the eyes of the birds, especially" the male ones, become tired, 'This causes the' fouthers around the eyes to stand out so tives the appearance of circles under them.

"The reasons for this tiredness, are several, First, if the bird is) kept by a young Indy in her sitting-room, the bird may be dazzled by the lights that are switched on when ner Jyoung man departs, Next, tne bird Jmnay be kept in © cage with another bird, In which case it is most probable that its mate would show the] fame signs of lalo nights, -'Then, the father of a family of canaries may develop circles by worrying about the next meal all night.

"The first-mentioned seems to be confined to the early spring but the others may be found all the year round, depending upon the temper ment of the bird. These are generally accepted as the principal rea-fons but there are a few minor ones.

It is also worthy of note that at the same time that the circles are seen, the colour of the legs seems to be paler and the bird seems to be weaker, This leads some fanciers to) believe that the bird has over~ gen 'i ease aping thal Seo 5 satis, Sie seer sy, aston, avg, started Yea
