Backs "New Dealers"
Covington, July 8.
Despite reports that he would not take any part in primary election campaigns, President Roosevelt today bluntly called for the re-election of Senator Alben W. Barkley, Senate Majority Floor Leader, during a speech here in which he vigorously defended his lending-Spending and work-relief programmes.
Senator Barkley, ardent New Dealer, is opposed by Mr. A. B.
udier, Governor of Kentucky, who is gaining a large following in his effort to be returned to the Senate.
President Roosevelt said that Mr.
Chandler never "left Washington empty-handed."
"You have heard charges," he said, "and counter-charges concerning the use of political nce exerted against voters in the primary elections. they are contrary to the direct and forceful order from Washington forbidding any Federal Government employee to tell those under him how to vote. And I trust the same rule applies... in Kentucky.
