Inadequate; Strong Action Threatened as Reprisal Warsaw, June 11.
The Polish Government has rejected the demand of the Danzig Senate for a reduction in the number of Polish Customs officials in the Free City. The demand, Warsaw has informed the Senate, is absolutely unfounded, and the opinion of the Polish Government is that the number of Polish officials is insufficient, Referring to the Kalthof incident, in which Germans are alleged to have attacked a Polish Customs post, the reply says that the instructions issued to Danzig Customs officials to accept no orders or suggestions from Polish Customs inspectors are completely unjustified. The step, it alleges, is solely to create difficulties for Polish Customs inspectors.
Further, the Note asserts, the instructions are contrary to the Warsaw agreement, Should any dispute aris as a result of these instructions, it is stated, the Polish Government will hold the Senate fully responsible.
"Any attempt to curtail the sphere of Polish control," the reply declares, "will be considered by the Polish Government as unwarranted and an infringement of the obligations undertaken by the Free City.
"Should the Senate fail to give consideration to the fully justified demands of the Polish Government, and have the National Socialist oath administered to Customs officials in the Free City, the Polish Government will have to consider what measures to take, since Danzig Customs officials will then provide less guarantee for Polish Customs laws being respected than heretofore."—Reuter.
