Allied Retreat Made Attack

Allied troops yesterday ended their southward retreat and suddenly Struck at the weakest link in the German ring, throwing back the invaders in a great battle in the Cam-brei-Valenciennes sector, according to French' military "sources here" last night. Allied troops fought their way into the outskirts of Cambrai behind the plunging assaults of tanks and armoured cars. Thus only 30 miles separated the main French Army and the Allied forces in the Flanders-Artois region, numbering nearly 1,000,000 men, who were encircles by the German thrust to the English Channel. The main French Army was trying to blast a hole in the German flank and break off the spearhead of the German drive to the Channel. Advance French troops reached the suburbs of Amiens yesterday.
