15,000 spectators out for the third vound of the National Singles Cham-ship Tournament here today were thrilled by one of the most epic battles in the history of modern tennis when Johnny Bromwich of Australia defeated Frank Shields of America to enter the quarter-finals of the series Bromwich won only after a terri-fe and gruelling struggle with Shields, who had been considered on his way down by sports writers as long as three years ago. The scores of the almost incredible match were 4-6, 10-12, 10-8, 62, 6-2.
Shields, in attempting to make a comeback, was at one time within two points of a smashing upset victory over the ambidextrous Austra-lion, whom most tennis experts consider second in the world of tennis today only to Donald Budge himself.
