ness was probably worse than criticism for overzealous efforts to entrap the United States into some Species of alliance, so those responsible wisely decided to risk the latter criticism. At first it was on precisely these lines that the Royal visit was criticized. There was very little evidence of even the forms of politeness which a guest might expect from a host, however unwilling. But, given a choice of evils that form of criticism was undoubtedly the lesser evil. The final result of enthusiastic approval, and the routing of all critics, was therefore extremely ratifying.
There are still some Americans who suspect that the only reason why the King and Queen went to Canada was in order that he might visit the United States and try to obtain some political advantage; there are even some English commentators who have appeared disappointed that an opportunity was not taken during the King's presence to make one of the strong anti-dictator state~ ments which have been frequent in the past. But these are in the minority. The majority look upon the King and Queen's visit as the visit of good neighbours, and having seen them at close quarters and under close scrutiny have. decided that they are better neighbours than they had imagined.
