WO south-east coastal areas were believed to have been shelled by the Germans on Monday, despite lack of official confirmation to this effect.
The first shelling v s reported to have occurred during the last half hour of the morning, while the second shelling was carried out shortly after.
The shellings occurred during air raids. it was ascertained, but since bombs were not seen falling from planes there was strong belief that the planes in the vicinity might have been "spotters" directing the German coastal artillery batteries in France.
If the reports are officially confirmed, the shelling on Monday will have been the first shelling of Britain since the bombardment of Scarborough in the World War.
