Stricter Precautions Continue

Precautions were considerably tightened up early on August 12 when the Shanghai Volunteer Corps was mobilized, whilst police search-parties increased their activities. The Japanese Navy also contributed to the patrolling in that a number of armed launches cruised wp and down the harbour throughout the day, carefully checking on river trafic.

One of these launches may be seen in the upper picture, Sandbag barricades which had been erected in front of newspaper offices all over the Settlement, were manned yesterday morning and will continue to be in the Hands of various $.V.C. units detailed for this duty until tomorrow morning. In the lower picture, the barricades in front of the "North-China Daily News" may be seen. A Lewis-gun has also been placed there, covering the entrance to the building and the alleyway running alongside.
