Highways Thick with Mud

The progress of the Japanese columns was all the more impressive, reports received here pointed out, because of thick mud blanketing the highway.

Aerial observation, staff officers here revealed, had shown a large-scale withdrawal of Chinese troops from Chengchow.

The headquarters of Gen. Hu Tsung-nan, Commander-in-Chief of the Chinese troops in the Kaifeng-Chengchow area, were reported to have been withdrawn to Sincheng, 50 kims. south of the railway junction.

With troops pouring in and cut of Chengchow, the city was reported by Japanese army aerial observers to be in confusion.—Domei.
