Tokyo, Nov. 16. Nation-wide observance of Japan's annual children's festival took on the aspect of miniature military and naval reviews yesterday as scores of boys and girls in the uniforms of field marshals, fleet admirals and Florence Nightingales paraded in the streets of Tokyo.
Escorted by mothers and sisters, the youngsters marched to the Meiji Shrine and other Shinto shrines. The festival is held yearly in honour of boys and girls who reach the ages of three, five and seven.
In normal times the children wore ordinary kimono in their parades to the shrines. This year the war atmosphere caused a change in their attire to that of gala full dress. Army and Navy suits for the boys and Red Cross dresses for the girls.—Domei.
