Yangtze Trade

A Strange Question

To the Editor of the "NortH-Cuina Dary News"

Sin—Your issues during the last few days have contained much regarding Japanese merchant vessels which are allowed to sail up the Yangtze, while ships of other nationals are not. I do not know whether what you state about the Japanese ships bringing general merchandise up and down the Yang-{re is true or not, but if it is true it means that local business men are able to do some business at least, which is something. Why then kill the lot of these poor creatures? If something could be done about restoring British Shipping on the Yangtze at the present moment, your articles would be justified, but under present circumstances they will only have the effect of putting the brakes on the few lines of foreign business which are still able to exist.
