Honan Return Home

Problem of Relief Faced By Japanese Peiping, Jan. 10.

Fleeing from the privations of refugee camps in Chengchow, junction of the Peiping-Hankow and Lunghai railway lines still controlled by Nationalist forces, 2057 Chinese have trickled through the Japanese lines on the north bank of the Yellow River since January 1 seeking to return home; a dispatch reaching here revealed today.

Weakened by cold and the lack of food, these homeward-bound refugees presented a problem for relief organizations operating under Japanese military direction, the report said.

Many of them complained that they bad been compelled to do forced labour by the Chinese military who neither paid them nor fed them for the work, it was further alleged.

About 7,000 other refugees from North China, now in Chengchow, are seeking to return home, they were reported to have revealed.
