Turkey Affirms Friendship With Soviet Russia

Paris Sees Pact with Allies as Inducing Italian Rapprochement; Near East States Welcome Accord

Paris, Oct, 21. T= rapid improvement of relations between Italy and Turkey, the possibility of an ultimate arrangement between Moscow and Ankara, and the barring of the road to the Balkans to the Germans are among the results which should accrue as a result of the Turkish pact, according to the press.

"Lo Petit Parisien" says Italy sees the resurrection of the hope that the neutral Balkan bloc is able to resist Russian pressure and the possibility of making her influence felt.

In this defensive policy in the Balkans, the journal adds, the Italians meet the Turks on the same ground.

Germany endeavoured to prevent the signature of the pact of mutual assistance betwee Great Britain, France and Turkey by exerting her influence on Soviet Russia to make demands in south-eastern Europe, according to well-informed circles here. Berlin, however, it is added, only succeeded in bringing about the suspension of the Soviet-Turkish talks.

It is understood that the clause in the pact permitting Turkey to refrain from military intervention against Russia existed in the first draft treaty, which was discussed by M. Viacheslav Molotov, Soviet Foreign Commissar, ana M. Sukru Sarajoglu, Turkish Foreign Minister, who broached it during the first conversation in Moscow. He was then trying' to associate Russia with Turkey's policy in the Balkans. Later, Germany is said to have tried to obtain definite advantages in south-eastern Europe in compensation for those she hed been forced to abandon in the north, On Berlin's insistence, it is alleged, the Russians tried to force an extension of the proposed agreement in the direction desired by Germany—that is, above all, closing the Dar-dandles. Turkey, while maintaining friendly relations with Russia, preferred to suspend the talks.—Reuter.
