Department Responds to 1,056 Fire and Special Calls; 51 Persons Lose Lives in Year

SUMMARY of the annual report of the Settlement Fire Brigade follows Number of Calls.

The Brigade responded to 1,056 fires and special calls during 1938, an increase of 150 calls on 1937.

This constitutes a record for the Brigade, the highest number previously recorded being 1,000 (in 1934).

Fire Loss.—-At fires which the Brigade attended within the Settlement and the Special-Rated Area the total loss was estimated at $2,006,123, Although this represents a decrease of $9,679,597 on the preceding year, it must be borne in mind that the fire loss in 1937 was extraordinarily heavy as a result of the local hostilities. and the damage in 1938 was above the average in normal years. This is attributable to several exceptionally extensive fires in the Yanglszepoo area, which was occupied by the Japanese military where conditions, particularly as regards means of communication, were not normal; seven of these fires resulted in an estimated Tggregate loss of over $700,000.
