Ribbentrop Alters Past Convictions

'A pungent riposte to the broadcast London, Oct. 26. made by the Reich Foreign Ministe:, Herr Joachim von Ribbentrop, ai Danzig on October 24, was made a leader in "The Times" today.

"The Times" declares that Hen Ribbentrop's rst failure (as Ambassador to London), was followed by 9 Series'of blunders which landed Germany in the worst diplomatic positlon'she has ever found herself in.

The dominant note of "this blustering demagogue" was hysteria, and hysteria so bad basis on which to conduct what the Nazis themselves describe as a war of nerves.

For years, "The Times" continues, he was busily advising his chief that nothing would induce Britain to take up arms. On Tuesday, he screamed: "This war against Germany has been systematically prepared for years by the present British Government."

Disastrous Bungler Aster enumerating the effects of his policy in Japan, Spain, Ttaly, the Baltic and Central and South-Eastern Europe, "The Times" says it would hardly be necessary to consider seriously the utterance of so disastrous 'a bungler if he did not still unfortunately occupy a position of international importance.

But the list of his half-truths and Hies, it adds, may be useful as further proof of the reckless debasement Which the diplomatic currency of Europe has sustained at his dands.

Having refuted Herr Ribbentrop's statements on the basis of recently published documents, "The Times" declares there is noi the. slightest doubt that Herr' Ribbentrop has antagonized large sections of opinion In his own country and ended a lamentable speech with a call to that war against Britain which itself falsifies his own forecasts and declares the bankruptcy of his own policy.

The "Manchester Guardian," in a leader on the same subject, says. the French can safely be left to answer parts of the speech which concern them, but points out that France had a pact of mutual assistance with, Poland tong before the National Government was in power in Britain.

That pact was valid until the end, the journal adds, and was twice renewed by the French and Polish
