New York, Feb. 17.
The significance of the present Japanese strategy on the Asiatic mainland is commented on by the "New-York Herald Tribune" this roming. Japanese action, the paper says, is about to shift from its present Central-China scene to Eastern Siberia.
"The timeliness of a Japanese move in that direction needs little demonstration. Mussolini's territorial dem-ends to France supported by Hitler have created in the Mediterranean a situation from wich no Far-Eastern Gevelopment can distract the attention of the Western World. This may not be true a year hence. The Japanese Army leaders may have persuaded themselves, as they would like to, that the Red Army has become wobbly as a result of the recent purge' but they know too much about their owa infirmities at the end of eighteen inglorious months in China to close with even the hind-quarters of the Russian beer until someone else has engaged it in front."-
