The Shanghai American Club captured the softball championship yesterday at the Columbia Country Club by taking the Buccaneers into camp. It took the Club team thirteen innings to break a two-all tie made in the sixth frame and emerged on the long end of a 3-2 score.
It was a thrilling contest from beginning to end. The Pirates displayed early power tallying in the first round on Roy Squires' four-ply hit with a team-mate on base. In the fateful sixth Catcher committed an error, which permitted two opponents to trot over the plate which knotted the score. Otherwise, the Buccaneers could have won the tussle and stretched the play-off series to at least another week-end.
The Americans were indebted to Fielden because of of his slugging in the 13th to bring Hebel home from third base. The most valuable man on the victorious side, however, was Pitcher Derby. He tossed a great game and was as stingy in his offerings as he could be. The losers swung helplessly most of the way. Derby was highly praised for his tight work in the tenth inning when he came out of the hole with one opponent on third and none away.
