The situation arising out of Ruman-la's request for British assurances in the face of economic demands from Germany was discussed today by Lord Halifax, Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, with the French, Russian, German and American Ambassadors, says Reuter's Diplomatic Correspondent.
M. Tilea, Rumanian Ambassador to Britain, last night saw Lord Halifax, and informed him of the demarche presented in Bucharest by Herr Wohlhat, head of the German Economic Mission in Rumania.
It is understood that the link between the kingdoms of Great Britain and Rumania was stressed, and also the Rumanian determination to resist any German, or other encroachment on her soil, wish the fuh force of her arms.
It is significant that while the information about the German move available in London is not against the wishes of the Rumanians, it was later vigorously denied in Bucharest, undoubtedly in the hope that Germany would be able to gracefully modify the position. i It is recalled that after the Czech crisis last September, Germany presented similar demands to Hungary. io the effect that Hungary should remain an agricultural country and restrict the size of her Army.
