New Boom Destroyed

Joint forces of the Army and Navy landed in the area—around Tzuhsiaocheu and Kuniucheu, nine nautical miles downstream from Shihweiyao, under cover of a barrage from warships and a naval unit blew up the Weiyuankeu Creek boom. The landing party quickly occupied the north and south slopes of Weishan on the. bank without suffering any losses, Domei reports declared. A westward advance was resumed with scarcely any delay as the warships and squadrons of planes bombarded Chinese troops on the mountain side.

Tu the engagement fought at Tanchiatung, about 22 kilometres northwest of Wushengkwan, the Japanese obtained three machine guns, 40 rifles, 19 horses and a large amount of ammunition, Further north, the Japanese column which occupied Waichow is reported to be crossing the East River and marching towards Sheklung, important city on the railway about 35 miles east of Canton.

At the same time, separate detachments are said to have been deflected towards Cheungmuktao in an effort to join up with the forces advancing westwards from Tamshui towards the rollway. The Japanese air force is playing an important role in the advance of the land units. Large fleets of bombers are subjecting Chinese strongholds in the path of the infantry to the fiercest raids ever experienced in South China. Meanwhile, additional troops are arriving from Formosa, and are being continually landed at Bias Bay.

The Chinese authorities in Canton today closed the Canton-Shekki approach to Macao, which has hitherto been used by evacuees. This action leaves only one exit from Canton, namely, via Kwangchowan.
