After the fall of Hankow does General Hata consider that Chiang Kai-shek will still possess an effective army capable of seriously engaging the Japanese forces?—I do not believe so.
Will there be a formal entry march into Hankow and what will be the actual form of the military occupation?—We are not thinking at the present time of a formal entry march into Hankow. The form of military occupation will depend solely upon the circumstances prevailing at the time.
Is there any possibility of peace terms being offered to Chiang Kaishek after the fall of Hankow or would the Imperial Japanese Army be unwilling to treat with Chiang Kai-shek on any terms. Have any plans yet been formulated -for the establishment of a Government at Hankow after its occupation?—This is a political matter beyond my authority o discuss. Whether or not a new government will be established in Hankow is a matter for the Chinese to decide.
