Hankow Heavy

Damage to Concession Tops

Y.1,000,000,000

Hankow, Oct. 30.

Total losses sustained by Japanese as a result of China's "Scorched Earth" policy in Hankow easily top the Y.1,000,000,000 mark, it was roughly estimated here by the Japanese military authorities and Mr. Yoshiyuki Hanawa, newly-appointed Japanese Consul-General for Hankow.

Close investigations carried out jointly by the Japanese military authorities and the newly-arrived Consulate staff revealed that practically all Japan-owned properties and establishments were razed by the retreating Chinese, All streets in the Japanese-Concession were in a shambles. Chinese also dynamited most Japanese buildings including the Hankow Shrine, the headquarters of the Japanese Naval Landing Party, the official residence of the Japanese Consul-General, the Consulate-General, the Japanese Residents Corporation headquarters, the Japanese Primary School, the Japan Club, the Dojinkai Hospital, the Nishihangan Temple and numerous other institutions.

Many other Japanese properties in the former British Concession would have been blown up had it not been for the timely action of foreigners who severed the fuses to the dynamite charges.—Domei.
