The visit of the English King and Queen provided him with a perfect occasion for giving another interpretation of his favourite role. AN this bowing and scraping was disgraceful and un-American. He was not going to kowtow to Royalty and shake the hand of the King and Queen, and if he was invited to the Embassy party he would not attend He would devote the time others would waste to a study of burning economic problems in the interests of the common people.
The surprising thing about the Royal visit was not that one or two politicians should have adopted this attitude, but that so few of them should have seized the opportunity. and that so many should have made no attempt to disguise the interest and pleasure with which they looked forward to the event.
