Foreigner Threatened

Ten minutes after the shooting Mr. V. Vasilieff, a P.W.D. inspector, was riding in a department car in Lane 922, Brenan Road, when some fifteen men believed to be members of the gang and to have included the assassins, halted him. As he shouted to them to make room for the car, six of them drew pistols and pointed the muzzles at him, he said. No shots were fired, however, and the fifteen men continued along the lane.

An unusual feature of the affair was the fact that members of the Bubbling Well Police Station staff, having received an alarm, used a bus of the China General Omnibus Company's fleet to turn out to the scene. The bus had been taken to the station a few minutes previously because of pocket picking inside the vehicle. The police, clad in steel vests, jumped into the bus and went in it to Connaught Road and the place of the shooting. They did not arrive in time, however, to engage the assassins in battle.
