Association of Chinese Buddhists who was kidnapped by plain-clothes men on October 19 from a temple at 50 D Edinburgh Road and whisked away in a motor car toan unknown destination is reported to have been escorted to Nanking where he may be asked to manage the affairs of a Sino-Japanese Buddhist Organization.
Chinese reports indicate that after the kidnapping it gradually became known that the well-known Buddhist leader had been sent to a military headquarters in Kiangwan. Many persons are said to have made: futile efforts to "rescue" him. Three days ago, the reports state, he was sent to Nanking.
The motive behind the kidnapping, the reports assert, is to ask Abbot Yuan Ying to head a Sino-Japanese Buddhist organization in Nanking. It is pointed out that before the kidnapping the Japanese had repeatedly sent men to negotiate with Abbot Yuan Ying asking him to take up the post but he refused to comply with the request.
