War of Movement Intensified

Fortunes Fluctuate in Belgium, France While Machines Wreak Havoc

Paris, May 18.

The war of movement in Belgium and along the northern fringe of France yesterday developed on an extremely wide and shifting front, the Havas correspondent in the lines reported last night. German motorized units, supported by massed formations of warplanes, advanced fanwise in various directions. A smal] number of tanks rashly advanced far from its base; this invoked a lightning counter-strike from the Allies, This isolated tank unit was not the only one to suffer the consequences of rushing far ahead of the infantry, for the Havas ctrrespondent declared that a general counterattack was launched yesterday against the flanks of all enemy motorized uhits which were dangerously distant from their fuel and ammuni tion supply bases. This counter-attack is being continued.

Allied forces defending the line from the River Scheldt, on which stands Antwerp, to the River Sambre, in southern Belgium, today stood firm against repeated attacks.—British warplanes carried out intensive raids over the enemy motorized columns and caused disorder with their low bombing and machine-gunning, the Havas correspondent added.
