And Market Dealers

The Shanghai Municipal Council yesterday addressed the following letter—signed by Mr. G. Godirey Phillips, Secretary and Commissioner-General—to various provision and merchant associations and market dealers.—

Gentlemen, In the interest of peace and good order in the Settlement the Council has recently introduced measures aimed at amelioration of the community's livelihood.

Certain members of your Association have, however, failed to comply with the Council's requirements under Municipal Notification No. 5233 which calls for the exhibition by them of price lists and for price tagging of basic commodities sold by them. You are therefore requested to bring this matter to their urgent attention and to instruct them to comply with the Council's requirements without further delay.

As you are aware, there has been an improvement during the past few days in the value of the Chinese dollar but there has been little or no decline in prices charged by retail stores, Prices which are increased when there is a fall in exchange should (unless there are presented reasons satisfactory to the Council) be reduced when the value of the Chinese dollar improves.
