Moscow, Jan. 18.
Long ice-bound in the northern wastes of the Arctic the Soviet icebreaker Sedov today was towed considerably closer to safety by her sister ship, the ice-breaker Stalin, at to wireless flashes received this evening.
Surmounting many obstacles, the Stalin continued towing the Sedov today although the" night of Jahuary 16 to 17 imposed extra difficulties when the tow rope broke several times, necessitating rapid repairs each time.
The ice-breakers then' plunged through a belt of thick ice. At one time while in this belt they had to stop for seven hours when the ice ground closed round them, threatening to crush even the thick hulls of these specially built vessels.
The relief steamer Stalingrad, carrying coal supplies to the two icebreakers, was reported to have arrived on the fringe of the arctic ice regions, awaiting the Sedov and Stalin, It now appears that the ice-Lreakers are racing against time, secking to reach the Stalingrad and secure precious coal supplies before }their present supplies are exhausted and they are compelled to wait for a third rescue ice-breaker.—Havas. material can be made for 75 gobi. The exchange for the American dollar in Harbin is normal—340 gobi, the exchange for, the. English pound being 1730 gobi. Also, the Harbin "patriot" concluded, the many free courses, training and expeditions to Japan make perspectives for Russian youth in Harbin much more promising than for Russian youth in this city.
