The coolies, who first struck about a Week ago, formally resumed work on May 1, with an understanding that negotiations would continue.
On Saturday morning they went io the P.W.D. depot in Rue Brenier de Montmorand to get their wages dnd found out that the French Muni. ripal Council, true to their notice issued during the strike, had subtracted three days' wages from the coolies' salaries.
The majority of the scavengers Were dissatisfied with the decision &nd declared another strike. Some, however, preferred to continue with their work, but were assaulted by the strikers. The French police were called out and forced the strikers out. A number of them were arrested, but later were released.
