Tokyo, May 12.
Broadly approving the statements made by Dr. Kumataro Honda, Japanese Ambassador to Nanking. in an interview in Shanghai on May 9, the "Japan Times and Advertiser" in an editorial this morning declared that the interview substantiated the impression that Dr. Honda is coming to Tokyo on important business.
"Direct negotiations with Chungking, as Dr. Honda points out, would be contrary to the letter and spirit of the treaty concluded with Nanking last year." the editorial declared, add ing that. besides, as Dr. Honda say it is far too late to talk peace with General Chiang Kai-shek.
Calling the Nanking Treaty the first expression of peace by the apanese motion addressed to its hour nation and the first sign of peaceful augury that has emerged from the tragedy of the war, the paper said that "Japan could never betray its own policy or principle by its failure to support the cause it has openly and ambitiously taken up."—Domei.
