Of all the excellent productions for which Miss Ginger Rogers and Mr. Fred Astaire have so far been responsible, there is none which anywhere near approaches "The Story of Vernon and Irene Castle" which opened at the Grand Theatre yesterday and which, whilst being another convenient vehicle for the two stars io display their artful feet, is something of which Hollywood may be justly proud, A natural and beautiful story told and enacted by the two logical stars for the parts and. whilst Mr. and Mrs. Castle may have kept the world spell-bound during the world war, they have found their undeniable successors in Miss Rogers and Mr. Astaire. Something which has not always been perfect in their previous productions, were the technical details and, search one as one máy, everything is as near to perfection. as may be hoped in the Grand's present attraction. Miss Edna May Oliver and Mr. Walter Brennan are supporting the main artists and it would be unfair to give a synopsis of the film here. not only because hair of the pleasure would be lost bui also because the story is so unusual and so different from the usual Hollywood produced scripts... in, fact, so near to life, that your reviewer feels the best way in which he may serve Shanghai cinema goers, is to warmly recommend "The Story of Vernon and Irene Castle."

A short precedes the main feature, "A Man to Remember"

"Edward Ellis "Anne Shirley "Lee Bowman "William "Henry Granville Bates VIL. Harlan, Briggs Lank M. Thomas Charles Halton "John Wray Gilbert Emery Dickie Jones Jean Johnson Carole Leete A more heart-throbbing story' about a doctor's life devoted solely for the Jove of humanity than the one depicted in "A Man to Remember" now being screened at the Metropol Theatre would be hard to imagine. Honours of a high standard should be bestowed upon Mr, Edward Ellis, who gave one of the best performances of his career playing the part of John Abbott, the country doctor. The picture is also interestingly produced, recalling his life struggles after his largely-attended funeral As he had predicted in his will, the three financiers dominate ing the town and who opposed his humanitarian plans, were the first to call at his lawyer's for their money. As they inspect each document with the lawyer, that period of the doctor's life is depieted. Such scenes as those of his struggles to put up a hospital in order to curb the large death toll claiming the poorer class of the community, where the kitchen was sometimes a necessary place to perform an operation and his-willingness to render his services cheerfully under the most trying conditions, will not be easily forgotten. The most touching scene in the whole picture was that shown at the climax of his life where he is given a scroll with all the names of the people on it, as their remuneration for his good work and particularly for his foresight and initiative in saving the {own from infantile paralysis. A fine picture performed by a fine actor can be recommended without "Reproof and Reserve"

Rome, June 1

"The Commissars speech sounds, above all, a note oi\reproof and r serve," declares "Il Popolo di Roma" today in commenting On the speech of M. Molotov, Soviet Premier, in Parliament yesterday.

"The situation adds, "remains as when M. Litvinoff (former Foreign Commissar) was torpedoed, but Great Britain had not then given way at every point, as she has done since Lord Halifax's journey to Paris and Geneva."—Reuter.
