Washington, Aug. 22.
When the British Prime Minister, Mr. Winston Churchill, in his speech to the House of Commons Tuesday, referred to British agreements with the United States regarding islands in the Pacific, he must have referred only to the Anglo-American agreement regarding the use of Canton and Enderbury Islands as United States naval bases, the acting Secretary of State, Mr. Sumner Welles, told the press here yesterday.
There are no other agreements and no negotiations are pending in regard to other islands in the Pacific, he said. The full facts of the agreement on Canton and Enderbury Islands were disclosed in a public announcement, he said. The agreement could not be construed as a broad compact affecting the relations of the two nations in the entire regions, as some individuals interpreted Mr. Churchill to mean, Mr, Welles" said.—United Press
