Officer Describes Battle

Epic fighting" by the British Expeditionary Force was described by a senior officer who has just returned from the battle area. In a broadcast last night he told how the BEF., after joining the Belgian Army east of Brussels, met attack after attack with unflinching gallantry and was forced to withdraw only by enemy penetration on another front to the south.

He spoke of the almost incredible difficuhies of withdrawal, the magnificent leadership, staff work and gal-sant endurance which marked its €xecution. The whole area was literally swarming with hapless refugees and ne would ever be haunted by the heartrending sight of a whole people weeing in terror, he stated, Successful extrication of long mechanized columns of the BEF., viten under intense air attacks, and dogged delaying actions fought by rear guards were alike remarkable ieàts but the gap southward remained unclosed and through it poured armoured and mechanized German formations.
