Local Recruiting Under Review

No Objection to Funds — Being Raised, But Full Decision Delayed

The British Government has no objection to the raising of funds in Shanghai to send recruits for the fighting services to Britain, but no recruits should be sent until further instructions have been received. The general attitude of the Government towards the recruiting of Britons in distant lands is now being reviewed, according to an official announcement issued yesterday, The announcement follow:

It will be recalled that, shortly after the outbreak of the war in Europe, His Majesty's Ambassador was authorized by His Majesty's Government to inform British subjects anxious to return to the United Kingdom to join the forces that, in view of the fact the requirements of the fighting services could be fully met from United Kingdom and Dominion resources, they could render better service by continuing for the time being to represent Imperial interests in their present country of residence.
