Expectant Atmosphere

As reporters gathered at the White House at 1030 am. yesterday for the usual Friday morning press conference with the President, word was circulated in the corridors that some momentous news would develop. Everybody expected the ennouncement to have some relation with the United States' obtaining some advantages in exchange for aid to England.

Strong efforts are being made in many quarters for the United States to take some move which might save England in her hour of peril. Since England is concentrating everything at home and relinquishing her Far Eastern strongholds, such as the Shanghai defence sectors. there hes been some speculation in Washington, that now would be a good time for the United States to make some deal relating to the various British Caribbean islands, which ere of no particular value to England either strategically or commercially, but are important to United States plans for the defence of the Panama Canal and for increased defence against any possible invasion of a European power through that region.
