A year or two ago we heard that Kay Francis had left pictures for good and all. She was dissatisfied with her stories and intended to settle down in a quiet life. One has heard this sort of assertion before and has learned not to take it too seriously, but for once Miss Francis did seem to be determined. And now she is back again and unmistakably back.
The manner of her return does credit to her character and her intelligence. For quite a long while Miss Francis was an unquestionable star in her own right. She played leads as a matter of course. Now, she is contented to be a supporting actress to a major star and by sheer strength of personality has managed to steal the two pictures in which she has been engaged to give support.
The first of these two pictures was "In Name Only." In this Carol Lombard was the star but the experience and ability of Kay Francis could not be denied and she was able to claim her full share of the honours. In "It's A Date," the same thing happened. Deanna Durbin's name was in the biggest letters but Kay Francis's performance was at least of equal size. A rest has probably done the actress good and it may be that she is enjoying a certain sense of relief in not having to carry the full burden of the picture on her own shoulders.
