"Speed the plough" should continue to be Canada's war-time motto, in the opinion of Canada's Governor-General, Lord Tweedsmuir, better known internationally as John Buchan, the author. "Ploughshares are far more powerful than swords," he said. "The conflict must be fought with the entire strength of the nation and a great task lies ahead of the Canadian farmers" A review of Canada's agricultural position indicates the nation's strength along these lines, In the 1914-18 war, Canada increased the area sown to wheat from 10,000,000 acres to 19,000,000 acres. The Dominion commences this war with 26,756,500 acres under cultivation to wheat and 31,535,300 acres to other crops. Furthermore, Canada will be in a better position to supply the. British requirements in bacon, fish, meats and other products, A census taken by the Government last summer shows that there were 8,500,000 cattle on Canadian farms, 4,300,000 hogs, 3,400,000 sheep and 62,400,000 poultry.
Cold storage holdings in Canada as late last year included 76,153,342 lbs. of teat, 41,400,000 Ibs. of fish, 56,200,- 000 lbs. of butter, 41,0000 lbs. of cheese, 13,900,000 Ibs. of concentrated milk, 4,500,000 Ibs. of dressed poultry and 231264 tons of potatoes.
While Canada today is but a minor producer of crude petroleum, she stands third highest among Empire countries. The possibilities for expansion, however, are considerable. Production of the Turner Valley oil fields in the foothills of the Canadian Rocky Mountains are estimated to run to a new record of 7,500,000 barrels annually, although operations are curtailed to about one-third capacity. Commenting on Canada's petroleum situation, the Royal Bank of Canada reported that "other fields are believed to exist in Alberta and, compared with the narrow strip 25 miles in length, comprising the present Turner Valley field, it is estimated that no less than 100,000 square miles in Alberta are favourable for oil production."
Recruits from Far and Near Men are coming from far and near to join the Canadian forces now in training, preparatory to proceeding overseas. A young engineer, employed by an oil company at Lagunilles, the Venezuelan village recently destroyed by fire, paid his own way to Canada to join the Royal Canadian Air Force. Similarly, four young men landed in Montreal recently after a 3,500-mile trek by dog team, whaleboat and inship from the Eastern Canadian Arctic to join up with the Royal Canadian Artillery. One of the four, a Cambridge University graduate, was attached to the British-Canadian Arctic Expedition, which has been doing exploratory work in the northland for the past three years. Two others are Hudson Bay Company employees and the fourth is a trapper, A War Supply Board was appointed by the Canadian Government, he said, to undertake the task "of organizing and mobilizing the nation's resources and industries, and dealing with the problems involved in the handling of supplies, the construction and extension of defence projects, and the approval of contracts for equipment and supplies required by all three bran-of our armed forces" This Government as its purchasing agent in the Dominion for supplies for the United Kingdom. a wisely-planned apporour financial resources,
