Japanese Facing Rice Shortage American Figures Show Crops Below Average

Washington, Jan, 29.

Japan faces an "acute shortage of rice" this year and, as a result, will Probably import 3,000,000 1b., which would be the largest imports in the history of the country, the Depart-tent of Agriculture reported here yesterday on the basis of information received from its Shanghai office.

The shortage resulted from a very small Korean crop, a poor Formosan crop and the smallest carry over in Japan in two decades, the report said. The Department estimated that the Korean harvest is 40 per cent, below last season. Imports of rice to Japan from China and southern Asia are expected, the report said.—United Press.
