Their plane riddled with shrapnel bullet holes, five French airmen returned to their own lines after hav-[ing successfully carried out a reconnaissance flight over Germany, in the face of grim difficulties. They have all been awarded the Croix de Guerre with palm, for their pluck and resource.
The airmen had reached the Rhine, when they were picked up by German searchlights. The pilot looped, dived and constantly changed direction to dodge the heavy fire from the ground.
