A mara of the Royal Asiatic

Society (N.CB.), jointly with the International Institute of China, will be held in the Wu-Lien-Teh Hall, 20 Museum Road, on February 15, at 5.90 pan, when the presidential address and a lecture, illustrated with lantern slides and specimens, will be delivered on "Some able Animals of China" by Mr. Arthur de C. Sowerby. The lecture will be open, to the public.

ORKNEY children, instead of going to school, receive their lessons by post and are also the first to receive with their lessons copies of a circular on "How the War is Going." It is designed to keep the children abreast of the war's developments and reviews the war at home, at sea and abroad for the preceding week. The Orkney. Education authority planned the scheme of lessons by post rather than involve the cost of providing air raid shelters in scattered island schools. Four schools with nearly 150 children aged up to 14 are affected.

Tue Berlin "Textilzeitung" protests against the number of English words surviving in Germany and says "We must eliminate such words as breeches, cape, blazer, shorts, knickerbockers, or such French words as crepe de chine, chemisette, bacon, and genre." The list is quite lengthy, but fails to cover half the foreign words in the Teutonic tongue of which, it is estimated, there are at least 250. The peculiarity of the Russian alphabet may complicate the question of replacements.

Ir is said that Britain's Chief Censor, 50-year old Vice-Admiral C. V. Usborne, who was Director of Naval Intelligence 1930/32, has been asked to resign, but no official announcement has yet been made. In that case supreme control will probably be vested in Sir Walter Monckton, K: C., who has been Director-General of the Press and Censorship Bureau since last October. Apparently Sir Walter iced the Prime Minister some weeks ago that he could not continue in office unless he were given real powers.
