During the Lunar New Year period a nation-wide movement was started. by the Chinese Government ae Chungking for raising "comfort" funds for Chinese soldiers and the movement is officially known as the *Spring Festival Army Comforting Movement." In Chungking and other places under Chungking's control contributions in kind were accepted from both Officials and populace, but in remote districts or provinces people Sent cash donations. Even in Shanghai a similar movement was started in foreign areas. In addition to cash contributions. amounting to well over seven figures, towels, soap, cakes and other gifts were sent to the front.
