Japanese Comment on Sir — Stafford Cripps's Remarks Statements made by Sir' Stafford Cripps, British M.P. and expelled

Labour Party member, in Shanghai on Tuesday that Japan was in a disadvantageous position in China, were criticized by a Japanese Embassy spokesman at the press conference yesterday: There had been much comment about disunity in Japan, said the spokesman, but after reading Sir Stafford's statements about Mr. Chamberlain, he. had come to the conclusion that there was disunity in Britain, too.

Sir Stafford, the spokesman continued, had not been to Japan and he had no knowledge of conditions in Japanese occupied territories in China, His statements had been based wholly on what he had been told or had heard in Chungking and his judgment; -naturally, - was -most one-sided. "Anybody can say that his statements, therefore, do not constitute a fair and judicious comment," the spokesman added, "There has been. general comment to the effect that there is a disunity. of opinion in Japan," the spokesman concluded, "but Sir Stafford criticized the policies of Mr. Chamberlain and this gives us ground. to" state that there is disunity of opinion in Britain.'
