In a communique issued at 7 a.m. today on the raids, the Air Ministry and the Ministry of Home Security states:
"Enemy aircraft last night crossed our south coast at many points and carried out a series of raids over a widespread area. Air-raid warnings elapsed before raiders passed' signals were given.
"Anti-aircraft defences were in action, and fighter aircraft were sent up to intercept the raiders. A number of high explosive and incen diary bombs was dropped.
"High explosive bombs fell on a Lincholnshire town and caused two minor casualties, but did little damage as far as is known hitherto. Many other bombs fell in open country, and some may have been directed at aerodromes."—Reuter.
Three horses grazing in the folds of Norfolk were the victims of a German air raid today, during which large quantities of small-calibre bombs were dropped.—Havas.
Paris Anti-Aircraft Guns Open Up "This ring of steel, however, was never closed, 333,000 Allied soldiers were embarked at Dunkirk, teaching Germany the significance of mastery Over the seas. Far from breaking our moral oür troops and our country revealed themselves equal to the strain and worthy of our ancestors. The heroism of the battle of Flanders and of the rear-guard fight before Dunkirk have already gone down in history. During these days the valour of our military leaders has affirmed itself in magnificent fashion.
"This morning I received Admiral Abrial, defender of Dunkirk. In these men, who have won the admiration of the entire world, France believes. In these men she sees revived the eternal glory of the generals of the revolution and of the admirals of French kings. All the glory has been revived by thousands of obscure sacrifices which will probably never come to light, made by soldiers of our northern armies and sailors. After the surprises of the first combat our soldiers of 1940 have proved themselves equal to those of 1914 who never doubted victory even when the Germans were winning.
